FAQs

General

There are two primary ways to register at KidsCanSwim – either by booking a free trial or by registering for our program directly. Our lessons are offered on a continuous basis and as such, parents can sign-up for lessons at any time – there are no terms.

We offer a free trial lesson so you and your child can come and take a look at our facilities, experience our curriculum and meet our teachers. Your free trial lesson can be booked through our online parent portal.

We ask that you take a look at the provided skills grid (PDF) to make an educated guess at where your child would fit best in our program for their first lesson. At this first lesson we will assess your child to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level.

Once registered through our online portal, you can book in your free trial, register for continuous lessons and pick your desired swim time.

Our curriculum is focused on the achievement of 3 core skills and 3 survival skills at each level. Unlike traditional term-based lessons where each week focuses on a specific skill and missing a week can impact your child’s likelihood of success, each of our skills is re-enforced and taught at every lesson your child attends.

This allows kids to progress at their own pace and focus on the skills that they struggle with while not feeling left out if they progress at a slower pace than those around them. It’s also why we offer swimming lessons 12 months of the year, 7 days a week with no terms. It’s the fastest and most effective way for your child to learn a life skill and progress.

Included in your monthly fee is one 30-minute lesson every week of the month.

Our facilities are purposely-built to teach kids how to swim with warm water, shallow pools and family-sized change rooms.

Our instructors are all deeply passionate about teaching kids to swim and our proprietary curriculum focuses not just on learning technique but on applying those techniques to real-life situations.

Our easy, intuitive, 24/7 registration system is accessible online and puts our parents in control of their schedule providing time-saving flexibility.

Our BabiesCanSwim program is designed for babies from 3 months old to 3 years old and for their parents. A parent or guardian must be in the water with their babies at all times. Progression in this program is based on age as babies’ capabilities change so quickly.

Our KidsCanSwim program is designed for kids starting at 3 years of age and is an independent program meaning parents are not in the water with their kids. Progression in this program is based on skills achievement rather than age and allows kids to progress at their own pace.

Kids lessons from K1 to K4 take place in our smaller 0.78m deep pool with occasional activities in our 1.1m deep pool. From levels K5 to K12 kids will have their entire lesson in our larger 1.1m pool.

For more information on our curriculum or facilities please check our “Why We’re Different” pages starting with our Purpose-Built Facilities.

Given the extraordinary need for swimming lessons in our community created by the pandemic, our Centre is currently operating at near full capacity and cannot guarantee that a makeup class would be with your same instructor. As such, we cannot offer refunds, credits or makeup classes for missed lessons in an effort to limit the potential contact between our guests, swimmers and team.

However, in the case that you are forced to isolate while waiting for a COVID test (medical note required) OR have been told your child cannot swim for a medical reason (medical note required), up to one makeup token per month will be provided to you for your use during an alternate available time. These makeup tokens are valid for up to 2 months and can be used to book a class in addition to your existing class and can be booked up to 1 week in advance. They cannot be used as credit towards future tuition.

This policy is in effect until, at minimum, December 31st, 2021 when we will reassess the COVID-19 situation and whether or not a return to group lessons will be possible at that time

Each KidsCanSwim level is comprised of 3 core skills and 3 survival skills. During the first week of each month we run our assessment week where all our kids get assessed for their progress against our skills.

Assessments are done by our senior teachers who have passed an Assessor Course. Parents receive feedback on their kids’ progression both in person from our Assessors and via the online portal.

All kids need is a bathing suit, a towel and their awesome selves. We ask parents to ensure any open wounds are covered with a waterproof bandaid as well.

For babies and kids who haven’t been potty-trained, we ask that they wear a swim diaper.

Registration

Send us an email! We’d be more than happy to walk you through the steps.

We teach parent-child courses for babies from 3 months old to 3 years old as well as kids from 3 to 12 years old.

We love our staff too and you can absolutely request a specific teacher. However, remember that thanks to our systemised teaching program all our instructors use the same methods, are dedicated to teaching kids and will deliver an exceptional lesson.

On our online portal you can search for class times based on both level and preferred instructor to see what classes they have available. If a particular level with a specific instructor is fully booked, you can add your child to a level- and instructor-specific waitlist. We’ll notify you if a time becomes available!

Our lessons cost $119 + HST/month for one 30-minute lesson a week. No hidden fees.

For a short time though, our introductory price is $99 + HST/month!

We accept payment through direct-debit or credit. We don’t accept cash for any purchases.

At KidsCanSwim we don’t believe in locking you into contracts. Our lessons are paid for on a monthly basis.

We’ll be sad to see you go! However, we understand circumstances can change. As our lessons are paid for in advance, in order to cancel you’ll need to contact us before your next month’s lessons are charged to your account.

If you have unused lesson remaining, we are happy to bank those for you for up to 2 years upon request.

We do not provide refunds.

Facilities, Programming and Safety

All of our swim teachers have both a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent and a National Lifeguard certification.

In addition to these base qualifications, all our teachers have received an additional 40 hours of KidsCanSwim training in aquatic education and working with kids.

We definitely do. Parents can choose to watch their kids’ lessons from the comfort of our air-conditioned viewing area, complete with coffee station and free Wi-Fi or from the pool deck. We also provide a small unsupervised children’s colouring area for any sibling not swimming.

We are closed for two weeks over Christmas and on statutory holidays. You can check out our pool calendar for more information.

Our aim is to make your child safe and independent in the water. We only use float aids for specific activities when teaching technique. In the event that a child falls into the water without any floatation aids we want them to be prepared and equipped with skills to make decisions to save themselves.

Our pools are purpose-built for young swimmers. The shallow pool is 0.80m deep (about 2.5 feet) and the larger pool is 1.1m deep (just under 4 feet). Kids lessons from K1 to K4 take place in our smaller 0.78m deep pool with occasional activities in our 1.1m deep pool. From levels K5 to K12 kids will have their entire lesson in our larger 1.1m pool.

In our BabiesCanSwim program, a parent or guardian needs to be present and in the water with their children.

In our KidsCanSwim program, parents are free to watch from the pool deck or from our air-conditioned viewing area complete with a Nespresso coffee machine and free Wi-Fi!

As an exclusively learn-to-swim pool, there is no casual swimming as this distracts children and can slow learning.

If we have to close our pool as a result of an emergency or unexpected situation, we will email all parents/guardians of kids with lessons on that day to ensure they are aware of the closure. We will also post it on our website and social media accounts.

We love finding new and engaging ways for you and your kids to connect to water safety and to build their confidence. As such, our three theme months each focus on a unique aspect of water safety. With help from swimming coaches and water safety experts your kids will complete fun activities like swimming in life jackets, completing safety obstacle courses and more to enhance their learning.

We know our product works and if kids attend their weekly lessons regularly, they will progress through our program and become confident and safe swimmers for life.

To that end, we offer a Learning Guarantee to all our swimmers. If your child has been at the same level for more than 24 weeks, your swim lessons are free until your child progresses.

In the majority of our classes our ratio is 4:1. With our focus on Active Learning time and our efficient and science-based curriculum, the 4:1 ratio provides a great balance of individual attention, learning by watching their peers and socialization.

Scheduling

Since we are holding a spot as well as scheduling an instructor just for you, we cannot offer refunds/credits or makeup tokens for these lessons. However, in the case that you are forced to isolate while waiting for a COVID test (medical note required), up to one makeup lesson per month will be provided to you for use during an alternate available time.

We know that kids learn best and retain more with repetition and constant practice. That’s why at KidsCanSwim we believe in continuous lessons all year round.

Critically, we also deliver a minimum of 60% active learning time where your children are doing drills, practicing scenarios and moving. Learning doesn’t happen though just sitting around and watching but through doing!

No problem! We have an ongoing curriculum that is focused on the achievement of 3 core skills and 3 survival skills at each level. Unlike traditional term-based lessons where each week focuses on a specific skill and missing a week can impact your child’s likelihood of success, each of our skills is re-enforced and taught at every lesson your child attends. This also allows kids to progress at their own pace and focus on the skills that they struggle with.

We want your family to be part of our KidsCanSwim family. Thanks to our innovative programming, we have all KidsCanSwim levels running within 15 minutes of each other so multi-child families can be in and out of swimming lessons on the same day within 45 minutes.
